KMV Organises Fourth Episode of International Series (Physics Chapter)

Dr. Ashutosh Goel, Department of Material Science and Engineering, Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey Addresses the Students

 

Kanya Maha Vidyalaya- the Heritage & Autonomous institution, Seat of Women Empowerment with Top National and State Rankings by India Today Survey of Best Colleges 2020 (various categories) & Outlook Magazine has taken yet another innovative initiative to promote sciences among students by organising KMV International Series (Physics Chapter). Under these series students will be taken to world’s renowned research laboratories like CERN, ENEA etc. virtually. In order to inculcate the scientific temperament and curiosity of research among students,fourth episode of KMV International series was organised. Dr. Ashutosh Goel, Associate Professor, Department of Material Science and Engineering, Rutgers, The state University of New Jerseywas invited as the keynote speaker of the fourth episode of KMV International series. The topic of Dr. Goel’s talk was “Turning Nuclear Waste into Glass”. Before starting his talk, Dr. Goel gave the virtual tour ofDepartment of Material Science and Engineering, Rutgers. During the virtual tour students as well as faculty was amazed by witnessing the preparation of Gorilla Glass employed by Samsung Galaxy phone. Later Dr. Goel introduced the concept of nuclear energy and waste associated with it. He said that “We live our lives surrounded by naturally-radioactive materials, and are constantly bathed in radiation originating from rocks and soil, building materials, the sky (space), food, and one another”. Over the years, many views and concerns have been expressed in the media, by the public and other interested groups in relation to the nuclear industry and in particular its waste. Later on various queries of faculty as well as students were addressed by Dr. Goel which helped to understand the concept more clearly. He shared various facts regarding radioactive materials and their disposal protocols. Principal Prof. (Dr.) Atima Sharma Dwivedi lauded the efforts of P.G. Department of Physics for organising such an interactive live talk with renowned scientists and virtual visit to international laboratories. She expressed that students as well as faculty have availed this wonderful opportunity renowned personalities which otherwise could have never been possible.
