The B.A. Programme in History offered by the Department of History at Kanya Maha Vidyalaya, Jalandhar, is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the historical development of India and the world. The programme covers Ancient, Medieval, and Modern Indian History along with courses in World History and Punjab History. For students who are not domiciles of Punjab, the department also offers a course in Punjab History and Culture to familiarize them with the rich cultural and historical heritage of the region.
The programme aims to develop historical awareness, critical thinking, analytical skills, and a sense of social responsibility among students. Classroom teaching is supplemented with educational visits to archaeological sites, museums, and heritage places to provide practical exposure and encourage experiential learning. These visits help students connect historical knowledge with real-life heritage preservation and cultural understanding.
The department also offers a three-month Certificate Course in Gandhian Philosophy and Thought, which introduces students to the life, teachings, and values of Mahatma Gandhi, promoting ideals of peace, non-violence, and social harmony. For postgraduate students, an interdisciplinary course on Indian Heritage : Contribution to the World is offered to broaden their understanding of India’s diverse cultural traditions and historical legacy.
To encourage leadership qualities and active participation, the department runs the Young Historians Association through which students organize seminars, competitions, heritage activities, quizzes, and awareness programmes. These activities help students shoulder responsibilities, enhance communication and organizational skills, and create awareness among youth regarding the importance of history and heritage conservation.
The programme prepares students for higher studies, research, teaching, civil services, tourism, archaeology, heritage management, and various other career opportunities while nurturing informed and responsible citizens.
