Established in 1952, the Department of History at KMV is one of the college’s foundational academic units. For over seven decades, it has provided quality education, fostered critical thinking, and nurtured research in historical studies. The department combines traditional scholarship with innovative teaching methods, preparing students for careers in academia, civil services, journalism, law, and beyond.

 History Pass outs find work in different fields and in many different roles as Archivists, Curators, Conservators, Historians, Civil Servants, Teachers and Researchers.

The syllabus covers a wide range of topics including:

Aim

  • The main aim of the department is to promote research oriented teaching and learning in history and also to create realization among students about the significance and relevance of History to understand our rich heritage.

  • To develop well-rounded academicians, administrators, parliamentarians, writers, journalists, and leaders who understand and appreciate India’s rich heritage and can contribute meaningfully to society.

Mission

  • To cultivate responsible citizens who promote patriotism, universal brotherhood, peace, and harmony through the study of history.

Achievements/ Accomplishments

  • The faculty has to credit one Minor Research Project granted by the UGC ,
  • In addition the faculty has conducted three surveys and two research projects under the ageis of UGC funded byGandhian Studies Centre
  • About 30 Papers Published by the faculty in International, National Journals and Books
  • 60 Papers Presented by the faculty at International and National Seminars
  • Faculty has acted as Resource Persons in Academic / Workshops at National and State level events as well as within the college for various Innovative Programmes like School for Personality Development, Foundation Programme and Moral Education Lectures
  • Faculty is also conducting training programs for JCI and Rotary Club of Jalandhar
  • One of the Faculty member is certified Zone Trainer

  • University Merit Record — History Honours students have swept top university merit positions consistently since 2005–06.
  • KMV Archives — A dedicated archives with digitised and conserved rare and old books dating back to 1886) for research purposes.
  • Rich Library Resources — Access to over 2,125 books in the main library and 1,025 books in the departmental library, including 675 titles exclusively on Gandhi and the National Movement.
  • Research Culture — Faculty have published approximately 30 papers in national and international journals and presented over 60 papers at seminars and conferences. The department has completed UGC-funded research projects and surveys through the Gandhian Studies Centre.
  • Developing e- content ( MOOCS)-The faculty has developed e- content including modules for MOOCS on Modern India and Political Sociology.
  • Innovative Teaching — Blend of classroom instruction with technology-enabled learning, including online lectures, YouTube resources, and PowerPoint presentations.
  • Educational Tours — Regular visits to historical sites, museums, and heritage locations to provide experiential learning.
  • Young Historians Association — An active student body that organises events, quizzes, debates, and commemorative programmes on national and international days.

  • Collection of CDs, documentaries, historical maps, atlases, charts, models, and flash cards

  • Subscriptions to journals including Fusion International Journal of Interdisciplinary Approaches, Gandhi Marg, and Indian Journal of Economic and Social History

Research Highlights

  • The faculty is involved in active research in various fields of History funded by UGC,ICSSR and ICHR.
  • The faculty is engaged in developing MOOCS for Government platforms like Swayam and swayam Prabha.
  • Two MOOCS – MOOCon History of India VI (c.1750-c 1857) – Developed 25 Modules in Four Quadrants, MOOC on Political Sociology – Developed 06 Modules in Four Quadrants are very popular courses.
  • The faculty is invited by various Universities as resource persons in their faculty development Programmes
